National Professional Qualifications

The Department for Education’s (DfE) vision is for an education system that drives social mobility, ensuring that every child and young person can access a high-quality education, regardless of location, prior attainment, or background. Over the past fifteen years, DfE and its predecessor bodies have sought to grow professional development opportunities for school leaders, with NPQs at the forefront of this provision. UCL Institute of Education is delighted to be working with our extended network of schools and MATs to deliver the following extended suite of qualifications. Serving leaders, Headteachers and executive heads have worked together to design bespoke material, based on current research to grow tomorrows’ school leaders.

National Professional Qualification Curriculum Framework:

The curriculum framework is built around six content areas and seven leadership behaviours, all of which are common to each level of NPQ, enabling leaders to develop the depth and breadth of knowledge and experience progressively through the levels:The six content areas set out what a leader should know or be able to do:

  • Strategy and Improvement
  • Teaching and Curriculum Excellence
  • Leading with Impact
  • Working in Partnership
  • Managing Resources and Risks
  • Increasing Capability

The seven leadership behaviours focus on how the best leaders operate:

  • Commitment
  • Collaboration
  • Personal Drive
  • Resilience
  • Awareness
  • Integrity
  • Respect

Scholarship Funding:

Scholarships & Funding: The introduction of the DfE scholarship funding has been extremely successful across the country, exceeding uptake expectations across NPQs. As a result, full scholarships are available until March 2020 providing that you have a valid TRN.

The eligibility criteria remain unchanged, i.e participants working in a category 5 or 6 area, and those working in MATs or dioceses which cover those areas, will be eligible.

If you want to check that your school is eligible for the DfE scholarship, please refer to the Scholarship Eligibility table.
By typing Ctrl + F and then writing the School URN or name on the search bar, you can confirm the eligibility status.

Those wishing to apply under this scholarships criteria must be aware: All scholarship applications are subject to DfE confirming available funding. Should funding not be confirmed, fees will be invoiced to you.
